KRELOK · BRIEFING

What just happened with SF water rates?

Approved 8–3 last night: a 9.2% average increase, tilted hard at heavy users. Who pays more, and when it lands.

The vote

The commission approved the increase 8–3 after a four-hour session. The headline number, 9.2%, is the average across all residential accounts. Almost nobody pays the average.

Who pays more

The new schedule is tilted at volume. Households under 4 CCF a month see about 5%. The top tier moves nearly 14%, and irrigation accounts more than that. If your usage is mostly showers and laundry, this is a coffee a month. If it's mostly a lawn, it's real money.

When it lands

Bills dated on or after October 1. One thing to watch: the same meeting opened a proceeding on sewer rates, which are billed on the same statement and were pointedly not part of last night's number.
